A Little Factoid
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed July as National Ice Cream Month. He also established National Ice Cream Day as the third Sunday in the month. He also appointed the third Sunday in July as National Ice Cream Day. Reagan recognized the popularity of ice cream in the United States (90% of the nation’s population consumes ice cream) and stated that these two events should be observed with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
A comprehensive history of Ice Cream can be read here.
So in honor of this beautiful day and month, DoubleBugs will be giving away 2 free pint coupons of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream to two lucky winners! What can be better than that?
Here’s what ya gotta do to win:

We use to make ice cream “bombs” where you slightly soften the ice cream and spread it along the insides of a medium bowl. Freeze it. Then semi-soften a second flavor and spread it over the first layer. Freeze it. Continue until filled….usually three or four flavors.
When it’s solid, you can loosen the bowl and you have this perfect “dome” of ice cream!

My favourite flavour is Cherry Garcia. I first became addicted to it when I was expecting my daughter and the doctor told me that since I couldn’t keep any other food down to at least try and eat ice cream. With a Ben and Jerry’s right around the corner and armed with an excuse like that, I became a regular customer.
As for an ice cream recipe, I actually posted several on my blog awhile back. Rather than type them out, I hope it is okay if I provide you with a link to what I wrote. Hopefully you will find something you will enjoy. http://www.northofthe49.com/blog/?p=194

Chunky Monkey, microwaved for only 15 seconds for the absolute perfect consistency. Then I use this very cheap thin metal spoon that came from some old roommate from my bachelorette days and fill just the bowl of the spoon - no overflow. Flip the spoon over and slide on tongue. Not sure how this ritual started but it makes it last forever and taste phenomenal!

My favorites are Cherry Garcia and Oatmeal Cookie Chunk.
Make two waffles and while they are hot scoop out some vanilla and sandwich it between the two waffles. A wonderful ice cream sandwich.
July 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Good grief! It’s Ben and Jerry’s! How do you pick a favorite?
July 21st, 2008 at 10:57 pm
It’s hard to choose only one Ben & Jerry’s fave, but it would probably have to be the oatmeal cookie one. I love oatmeal cookies! I don’t have a favorite ice cream recipe, although in college I used to just buy vanilla ice cream and add my own “mix-in”s, like crushed graham crackers, granola, maybe some pretzels (I loved mixing the sweet & salty!)…. now I just opt for all the mix-ins already in there!
July 21st, 2008 at 11:15 pm
My fave is Chunky Monkey. My own fave recipe is plain frozen yogurt with banana chunks. I don’t know why no one has manufactured it before. It’s so simple and delicious. Thanks for the great contest!
July 21st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Phish Food for me!! I don’t really do “recipe” type things with ice-cream because I like to keep it simple!
July 21st, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Uhm…I don’t really do too much cooking stuff. I’ve got a bottle of fudgey stuff in the fridge that I pour over my Chunkey Monkey. Does that count?

Dublin Mud Slide. My youngest son and I always share a pint of it when we get it. My favorite ice cream recipe for would be for chocolate sauce to put on top of homemade ice cream.
Melt 2 tbsp. butter in pan. Add 5 oz evaporated milk and 1 cup semi-sweet morsels. Boil for two minutes, let cool, serve over homemade ice cream.
